Having graduated with a B.Sc in Geophysics (2nd Upper Class Honours) from the University of Science of Malaysia (USM) in 1987, he served in the Civil Service from June 1987 to March 2000 in various federal departments, which gained him his good relationships with the federal department. He represented Malaysian Meteorological Services attending the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Workshop on Numerical Monitoring of Natural Disasters and Floods in Beijing in 1998 after he was trained under the Indian Meteorological Department in Pune from 1988-1989 and being awarded with Advance Certificate in Meteorology.
He always has a passion for law and justice, and therefore, he studied law at the University of Wolverhampton, United Kingdom and was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Laws with Second Class Honours (2nd Division) (LLB Honours) in October 1996 by the University of Wolverhampton, UK. He was awarded the Certificate in Legal Practice by the Malaysian Legal Profession Qualifying Board in October 1998 and thereafter was admitted to the High Court of Sabah and Sarawak in the State of Sabah on 17.05.2001 as an advocate.
He practised as an advocate and solicitor from 17th May 2001 to 31st May, 2003 in the legal firm of Messrs. Shelley Yap Leong Tseu Chong Chia & Co., Kota Kinabalu, Sabah in the areas of civil litigation, conveyancing, land law, family law, bankruptcy law, succession law, corporate and company law, contract law, industrial and labour law, and banking law and founded this firm in 2003 under the name of Kenneth Thien & Associates.
He is a very diligent and smart advocate who always puts the interests of our clients first. He has vast experience in almost all areas of law. Clients always find it beneficial to just talk to him as he is never shy or reserved about sharing his opinions and knowledge. Today, besides being an advocate, he is also the Assistant Bishop of the Anglican Church in Sabah, Malaysia. He devoted most of his time now serving the Lord and serves as a Consultant for PS Lin Chambers.
